I'm interested in Tokyo, Kyoto, or another large city. I have a B.A. in communications, and basic Japanese language course experience. Also, are there any places in those cities that are good for when you feel homesick, want to watch NFL football, etc.?

First of all, you can't watch NFL games unless you have satelite tv. Baseball and soccer are popular so you can see them there. NFL isn't so you'll have to watch online. www.gaijinpot.com has a good number of listings for various jobs. Good luck. If you go to Roppongi, it is a popular foreigner hangout area in Tokyo.

I taught English there and I loved it. But, the best thing you can do is to learn the language very well. This will open up a lot of doors for you. SOOO many people I know there have Skyperfect satellite. Why don't you just do that. Or, go to one of the tons of sports bars. I never got homesick for the shitty USA.

What do you think you could do? Try it. It seems that the vast majority of Westerners in Japan are teaching English, though that's not always the case. I worked in a photo studio. I swear I must be the only white guy to have ever done that in Japan. However, I can speak Japanese conversationally. I saw caucasian truck drivers from time to time. I met a guy from Brazil who worked in a factory. I met a guy who ran a bar, another guy who ran a different bar and ran an accomodation-finding agency. I met an engineer. If you join the JET programme, most people think of the one position, which is an ALT, assistant language teacher, but there are also sports teachers and positions in local international centres and whatnot, putting together events. Tokyo is massive, so there must be jobs for you there. Kyoto isn't so huge, but it's incredible. If you can find a non-teaching job there, you are my hero. Good luck.

Teaching English seems like its the easiest way to get to Japan. If your from the US you should also look into getting a civilian contractor or GS position in Japan on the US Military bases. You would get paid in dollars(You can always exchange it for yen at the bank) and your job opportunities would be broader. You would also get SOFA status also. The bases I can think of right now are: Yokota Air Base, Yokosuka Naval Base,Camp Zama,NAF Atsugi,Camp Fuji. These bases aren't that far from Tokyo. It's great when your homesick almost the entire base are American. You should be able to go to the clubs on base and watch NFL football with everyone as well. Some bases even have Taco Bell, Burger King, Popeyes Chicken and other American food places as well. It will be like you never left the States in the base. Step outside the base and you back to Japanese culture.

Have you considered marketing positions for a Japanese company who needs to provide English content for overseas customers - online, documents, manuals, etc. What about the hospitality industry as a assistant manager or customer liason in hotels, resorts, amusement parks, etc.
