Can I get married in Japan if I do not live there

Can I get married in Japan if I do not live there?
My boyfriend has asked me to marry him. He is a Japanese man and a Japanese citizen and would like us to be registered in Japan as husband and wife. I know I have to visit the US Embassy in Japan, but do I need to be LIVING in Japan in order to be married thru the Japanese government? I am of course, of legal age to be married.

No, you do not need to be living there. We were foreign students once and there was this Filipino who was finishing his course there and he got married to a former American classmate who already went back to the US. The Japanese government allowed them to be married and be registered as being married in Japan.

No, you do not need to be physically in Japan to BE married, but you do need to be in Japan to submit the Kointodoke to City Hall. The Kointodoke is sort of like the marriage license, but it is not really a license. It is more like registering your family as a household. When you submit it to City Hall, you both need to be present. You also need to get an INKAN or a HANKO stamp to stamp the documents. Once that is finished, you can return to where ever you were to continue whatever you were doing until you come back for good, or he goes to you. If you were trying to get a spouse visa, you would have to be here physically, in Japan, living together. Immigration agents are aware of shame marriages just to get visas, so they check all international marriages closely for the first year or so. Agents will go to your neighbors and ask about you, etc. It is a little unnerving, but that's the way it is. By the way, if you get married in Japan, you don't have to do anything at the US embassy or consulate. When I got married, I check and they said, "congratulations, why are you calling?" LOL! No documents or anything. Now, filing your taxes is another matter. Once you get to that point, just ask me about it. Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!

No id on't think you need to be a resident there. But, as long as your spouse is a japanes citizen you can get married there.

Yes you can get married without being a citizen. I am American and got married to a national last year. You have to go to the embassy and get a paper notorized, the American embassy in Tokyo doesn't notorize in the afternoon so call before (that is if your American, don't frget they are closed on both American and Japanese holidays). You will have to present this paper to the Japanese court house. You will also need you birth certificate translated into Japanese. If you have been divorced you have to wait 6 months from the finalization date before you can remarry in Japan. It you also need to go to the Japanese court house and register as a foriegner. They will give you a card. I believe you will need this card (or the temp that they give to you right away) for the marriage documents. It is really frustrating going to the court house 4-5 times because you forgot a paper ect. Ask you fiance to have all the paper work ready and filled out.

♡First of all Congratulations!!!♡ ~Yes, you can get married in Japan if you do not live here! My sis, a few friends and even I married our Japanese hubbies and we didn't live here. We're all American. Once you're marriage is registered, you don't have to live here. My sis lives in the U.S. I choose to live in Japan. Yes, you do have to get an 'Affidavit of Competency to Marry' AND it needs to be translated into Japanese as well. You'll need to have your passport, of course. Take a look here: http://japan.usembassy.gov/pdfs/wwwf7114.pdf You may need a copy of your birth certificate. ☆I didn't. You will have to sign the Kon-in todoke along with your hubby and have two witnesses. If they are Japanese, they must use their inkan/seal/hanko. If non Japanese, their signatures. You are NOT expected to have an inkan/seal/hanko. ☆I DID NOT nor did my friends or sis and our Kon-in todoke were just fine. I did immediately get my inkan soon after though. (Banking purposes) And no you do NOT always have to register together. It depends. When we called our City Hall, they said ☆I DID NOT have to go together. My hubby could register the Kon-in todoke himself, but we went together as we celebrated after. (^_-)-☆ ~☆Your 'hubby to be' should call HIS City Hall to make sure if you must appear or if you need a copy of your birth certificate translated into Japanese. It's VERY easy and you'll get all the correct info so that the process is easy.(^_-)-☆ If you plan to live in Japan after you register you will HAVE TO live here in order to get your Alien Registration card at City Hall and your spousal visa at Immigration. These must be done IN PERSON, by YOU. Good luck and again, Congratulations! Be ...┢┦aΡpy ♡^_^♡
