That depends. Socially, if you're not Japanese and you go somewhere like Shizuoka, it might be difficult. Places that are more conservative won't accept you as easily.

I think $100,000 is enough amount for 4 years. So you don't have to worry about money so much.

hokaido is very rural country area depending on the location. the area is "slower" than that of tokyo or osaka so the cost of living is cheaper. 100000CD should be enough. however if you want to travel around japan it may costs more.

The money should be more than enough. More important question is, how well is your Japanese? Are you fluent enough to set everything up yourself? Do you have your student visa? Prepared to live in a very foreign environment?

First of all Welcome to Hokkaido. It is true living costs are a lot cheaper up here than in Tokyo or Osaka although Sapporo(I am assuming you will be based in Sapporo) is a city of about 2 million it has a very rural feel to it and gaijins(foreigners) actually living up here are somewhat rare. A good place to learn Japanese. In regards to living costs what you have budgeted should be more than enough to live fairly comfortably and should have spare to be able to do some travel around the rest of Japan while you are here. To give you an idea of some monthly costs for rent I pay 50000 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment just out of the city center.(about 15min bike ride from the main station) about 5000 in Gas 3000 in power and 5000 in water and waste 3000 for telephone. 10000 a week generally covers food and transport although I use my bike alot in summer. Pretty much in total 100000 a month should cover everything In winter it is somewhat more expensive for heating and also transport. Happy Planning and welcome to the rural heartland of Japan.
